About IPMS

The British Plastic Modellers Society was founded in 1963 in London very quickly changing the title to International Plastic Modellers Society as it expanded.

Today there are many societies around the world, a testimony to the popularity of the model making hobby. Each of the national societies is independant but all unite in a common aim of encouraging the “art” of model building in plastic although nowadays many other materials are used.

Members range from the complete beginner to master craftsmen skilled in constructing from basic materials.

IPMS (UK) has many branches throughout the country plus numerous Special Interest Groups (SIGs) dedicated to particular areas of expertise such as Aerobatic Teams or the Gulf War. Details of these branches and SIGs can be found on the national website.

About the Branch

The Mid Sussex Branch was formed in 1986 when two IPMS members exhibited at Brighton Modelworld and were approached by a number of local visitors. The first meeting was in a pub (where better) in Brighton then later in our Chairman’s house. Six of those who joined in that first year are still members of the branch.

Over the succeeding 20 years the branch has expanded to around forty members, including a number of ladies. We have met for some years at Southwick Community Centre, on a regular basis. At these meetings we spend much time in chatting about modelling, drinking tea and holding fun model competitions.

Among our other activities we support various model shows around the country and on the continent. We are twinned with Les Maquettistes de Beauvaisis a model club based in Beauvais, France.

We have, in the past, held our own shows at Newhaven Fort, a very interesting venue in its own right. The port of Newhaven was heavily involved in the Dieppe Raid and in D-Day and we have rebuilt the D-Day diorama in the Forts displays. We will soon be providing some aircraft models to supplement this.
